• Consultation
  Your implant consultation is a chance for us to outline what is involved as part of treatment, and to answer your questions. We carry out a detailed examination of all aspects of your teeth and gums as well as consulting you about any relevant medical issues. We often recommend getting a 3D X-ray image known as a CBCT scan to analyse the volume of available bone as well as its quality for accommodating an implant root.
• Surgery Day
  Dr Gary Cohen will identify exactly where to place the implant. The location of the implant will determine its long-term success, and our team are highly experienced at achieving this.Your surgery will be under local anaesthetic. The implant is placed and left to heal.
• Healing
  The implant requires a healing period of 3 to 6 months to merge (osseointegrate) with the jawbone.
• Bespoke crown
  A bespoke crown is made and ready to be placed once the jaw has fully accepted the implant as a new part of its anatomy.

Aftercare

• Short-term aftercare.
• Stick to soft foods for 2 weeks after surgery.
• Bathing the area with warm salt water for 3 times a day for 1 week after treatment helps healing. Avoid using chemical mouthwashes.
• Use over-the-counter medication to control any discomfort such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
• Be gentle and avoid brushing and flossing around the implant site.
• Do not smoke during the healing period – this is one of the biggest contributors to implant failure.
• Avoid alcohol for 2 weeks as this affects the healing process.

Long-term aftercare

• Use floss and interdental brushes (TePe) and brush twice daily. Your dentist will show you how to brush and floss around the implants.
• Attend hygienist and dentist appointments to ensure your implant does not become affected by peri-implantitis (gum disease for implants).
